Sony Unveils PlayStation 4 Video Game Console Design, Pricing, & Release Date at E3 2013

Sony has finally unveiled the PlayStation 4 video game console’s design at E3 2013 after facing criticism for not showing a physical console at the initial announcement in February. The new console is all black, looks somewhat like a slanted PlayStation 2, and shares a partially shiny, partially matte design with Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Sony also took aim at Microsoft’s online requirements and used game policies for the Xbox One, promising the PlayStation 4 won’t impose restrictions on lending or reselling game discs and users will not have to be connected to the internet to play single-player games offline.

Turning to games, Sony announced a number of new PlayStation 4 exclusive titles like The Order: 1886 developed by Ready at Dawn, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV — formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII — and Kingdom Hearts 3. The company also provided brief updates on previously announced PlayStation 4 launch titles Killzone: Shadow Fall, Evolution Studios’ DriveClub, and KnackInfamous: Second Son will be released for the new console in Q1 2014, as well as Blizzard’s Diablo III, and Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be released exclusively on the PS3 and PS4. Upcoming Bethesda MMO The Elder Scrolls Online will also be available on the PS4 in Spring 2014.

Sony also showed off a number of indie games that will be console exclusive to the PlayStation 4 — though several have already been released for the PC. Transistor from Bastion developer Supergiant Games, Don’t Starve by Klei, and Mercenary Kings by Tribute Games — the developers behind Scott Pilgrim — will all be coming to Sony’s new console alongside Young Horses’ Octodad: Dadliest CatchSecret Ponchos by Switchblade Monkeys, Ragtag’s stealth-action puzzler Ray’s the Dead, and Outlast by Red Barrel. Oddworld Inhabitant will also launch a remake of the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee titled Oddworld New N Tasty, and 7 bit Games, creators of Skulls of the Shogun, will release a side-scrolling world space shooter titled Galak-Z The Dimensional.

Developers also demoed previously announced titles Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Watch Dogs, and Quantic Dream showed off a small clip of another impressive tech demo titled The Dark Sorcerer. Sony also briefly touched on upcoming entertainment offerings like Redbox and Flixster, which will join existing offerings like Sony Video Unlimited, Music Unlimited, Netflix, and more.

The PlayStation 4 will cost $399 — $100 less than Microsoft’s Xbox One — and will be available “this holiday season.” Sony’s website has a current list of PlayStation 4 games, and for more coverage of Sony’s E3 announcements, head over to Kotaku.

CBGB, Film Tells the History of New York City’s Legendary Club

50,000 bands and 1 disgusting bathroom

CBGB is an upcoming feature film directed by Randall Miller that shares the history of New York City’s legendary and (now) defunct club, Country, Bluegrass and Blues (known as CBGB). Rolling Stone reports that it was produced for less than $10 million and will CBGB feature more than 40 songs from the club’s heyday. It’s set to be released later in 2013.

CBGB tells the story of Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman) and his New York club from its conceit as a venue for Country, Bluegrass and Blues (CBGB) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock ‘n’ roll and punk. When Kristal had difficulty booking country bands in his club on the Bowery, he opened his doors to other kinds of rock music. Kristal had one demand of the acts he booked: they could only play original music. No top 40?s, no covers. It was the credo he lived by — support the artist at whatever the cost. Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk, giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police.

Samsung Announces the Galaxy S 4 Android Smartphone

Samsung has officially unveiled its newest Android smartphone, the Galaxy S 4, at its Unpacked event. The 7.9mm thick, 130g weight device will feature a 5-inch, 441ppi Super AMOLED display, and is similar in form factor to the Galaxy Note II and Samsung’s previous flagship device, the Galaxy S III.

The large-scale unveiling event took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and according to Philip Elmer-DeWitt of CNNMoney it was “an information-packed presentation scripted as a Broadway show that would have bombed in New Haven.”

The S 4 runs Android 4.2.2 with TouchWiz and features a Samsung Exynos 5 or Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor based on the region, with 2GB of RAM and a 2,600 mAh battery. The phone will come with 16GB of on board storage with 32GB and 64GB options, and a microSD card slot. Samsung also revealed that the S 4 will have LTE and Bluetooth 4.0, and well as an IR blaster for remote control, a temperature and humidity sensor, and NFC.

Samsung is touting the phone’s 13-megapixel camera, and the S 4 will have a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The company also unveiled the S 4′s Dual Camera feature, which allows users to insert themselves into main camera shots using the front-facing camera, and Sound and Shot, which lets you record five seconds of audio before you take a photo. Drama Shot will take multiple shots from a video and create a multi-frame collage. With Eraser, users can remove unwanted passersby from their photos.

Air View allows users to get a preview of and swipe through photos by hovering over the screen with a finger, similar to the Note II’s S Pen feature. Samsung also mentioned that it works with gloves. Samsung’s Air Gesture allows users to navigate the phone and answer calls with a swipe of their hand, without having to touch the screen. With Smart Stay, the phone detects whether or not you’re looking at it, and will automatically pause videos if you look away, and restart them when you look back. The phone doesn’t feature automatic eye-scrolling like rumors suggested, but users can scroll by tilting the phone up and down.

Samsung also introduced its S Translator software, which knows 10 languages including English, and translates speech-to-text and text-to-speech. S Translator also lets users take photos of menus, signs, etc., and translate them even without an internet connection. Samsung HomeSync comes with 1TB of cloud storage, and connects with your computer, phone, tablet, and TV. Samsung also detailed S Voice Drive, which connects the S 4 to a car via Bluetooth 4.0. Additionally, the company unveiled new S Voice features, which reads messages and lets users act on them, similar to Apple’s Siri. Samsung wants to make it easy for users to switch to the S 4 with Smart Switch, with which users can transfer their info to a PC, then to the phone.

Group Play lets users to play music, multiplayer games, and photos across multiple S 4s, and ChatON has video calling for up to three people. S Health can tell how much a user walks every day, and with accessories like an S band or a body scale the app can track and display that data.

For business and enterprise users, Samsung detailed its Knox software that the company announced at Mobile World Congress. Knox separates the phone into a work and personal side, to eliminate the need for multiple devices. While Samsung didn’t reveal pricing or carrier information, the company said that the S 4 will be available in Black Mist and White Frost in 155 countries beginning in April.

Here’s a look at it from today’s event:

Review (spanish): Smashed

Encarecidamente recomendada.

Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men…all will play the ‘Game of Thrones.’

A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios(Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie(Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Ubuntu Tablet OS Unveiled

Canonical introduces the Ubuntu tablet interface, which will compete with Android, iOS, and Windows with its own take on multitasking and advanced security features. Canonical claims that future versions of Ubuntu will be able to run an Ubuntu app across four different user interfaces (desktop, TV, smartphone and tablet) with no need for special programming for each version. Users can start testing the interface on Feb. 21, when the Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will be published with installation instructions for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets, as well as smartphones such as the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. The new Ubuntu tablet OS can be differentiated with partner branding, content, services and apps and has been specifically designed with operator and OEM customisation in mind. Watch the promotional video about the Ubuntu Tablet OS and see it in action. Canonical explains:
“Our unique interface design scales from the phone to the tablet, and works equally well on pocketable consumer-oriented tablets from 7″ up, and full-blown media or enterprise tablets with screens from 10″ to 20″ and high definition resolution. And since there are no physical buttons needed beyond the power switch, you have more flexibility for incredible device design with Ubuntu than any other platform today.”
