French video game developer Quantic Dream — the studio behind Heavy Rain — has released an impressive PlayStation 4 tech demo called “The Dark Sorcerer.” The first few minutes of the 12-minute demo were shown atSony’s PlayStation 4 press conference earlier in the week. “The Dark Sorcerer” is running in real time on the PlayStation 4, but is not part of any game Quantic Dream is currently developing. Previously we’ve written about Kara, a Quantic Dream tech demo created to showcase motion capture on the PlayStation 3.
Sony has finally unveiled the PlayStation 4 video game console’s design at E3 2013 after facing criticism for not showing a physical console at the initial announcement in February. The new console is all black, looks somewhat like a slanted PlayStation 2, and shares a partially shiny, partially matte design with Microsoft’s Xbox One.
Sony also took aim at Microsoft’s online requirements and used game policies for the Xbox One, promising the PlayStation 4 won’t impose restrictions on lending or reselling game discs and users will not have to be connected to the internet to play single-player games offline.
Turning to games, Sony announced a number of new PlayStation 4 exclusive titles like The Order: 1886 developed by Ready at Dawn, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV — formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII — and Kingdom Hearts 3. The company also provided brief updates on previously announced PlayStation 4 launch titles Killzone: Shadow Fall, Evolution Studios’ DriveClub, and Knack. Infamous: Second Son will be released for the new console in Q1 2014, as well as Blizzard’s Diablo III, and Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be released exclusively on the PS3 and PS4. Upcoming Bethesda MMO The Elder Scrolls Online will also be available on the PS4 in Spring 2014.
Sony also showed off a number of indie games that will be console exclusive to the PlayStation 4 — though several have already been released for the PC. Transistor from Bastion developer Supergiant Games, Don’t Starve by Klei, and Mercenary Kings by Tribute Games — the developers behind Scott Pilgrim — will all be coming to Sony’s new console alongside Young Horses’ Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Secret Ponchos by Switchblade Monkeys, Ragtag’s stealth-action puzzler Ray’s the Dead, and Outlast by Red Barrel. Oddworld Inhabitant will also launch a remake of the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee titled Oddworld New N Tasty, and 7 bit Games, creators of Skulls of the Shogun, will release a side-scrolling world space shooter titled Galak-Z The Dimensional.
Developers also demoed previously announced titles Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Watch Dogs, and Quantic Dream showed off a small clip of another impressive tech demo titled The Dark Sorcerer. Sony also briefly touched on upcoming entertainment offerings like Redbox and Flixster, which will join existing offerings like Sony Video Unlimited, Music Unlimited, Netflix, and more.
The PlayStation 4 will cost $399 — $100 less than Microsoft’s Xbox One — and will be available “this holiday season.” Sony’s website has a current list of PlayStation 4 games, and for more coverage of Sony’s E3 announcements, head over to Kotaku.

Batman: Arkham Origins, A prequel video game starring a “young and unrefined” Batman.
“Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight.”
A company called Virtuix, developed the Omni, an omnidirectional treadmill controller for virtual environments. The company has shown off support for games including Crysis Warhead, Team Fortress 2, and Skyrim in a series of YouTube videos, but we’re told that the device will work with all PC games when it’s released. Virtuix is aiming to launch a Kickstarter campaign for the Omni around the end of May or the beginning of June, and it’s targeting a price of $400-600 for the device. Watch the videos after more, it looks cool!
Optical Illusion Creates an Underwater View of Rapture, A City From the ‘BioShock’ Video Game Series
We can now take a trip to Rapture, an underwater city from the BioShock video game series, thanks to an animated spiral optical illusion and in-game images posted by redditor supergalacticcaptain. To create the underwater illusion, you must first stare at the center of the spiral above for 30 to 60 seconds. After that, your vision should become heavily distorted, which is the perfect time to view each of the images of Rapture below. Mind blown?
Husand and redditor XsimonbelmontX went above and beyond for his wife’s birthday by creating her a custom Monopoly board game based on of the Fallout video game series. He spent 8 months handcrafting all of the game pieces and putting in a lot of extra details, such as the Fallout logo that he burnt onto the top of a jewelry box.
Wife is a huge Fallout fan. I told her, “your birthdays are going to be really, really disappointing from now on.”

Game Theory by Ithaca Audio is a mashup of 19 iconic tracks from Tetris, Doctor Who, and other video game titles, television shows, films, and music videos. The mashup was performed live on specially-configured NES controllers.
2013 marks 35 years of video game music (Space Invaders, released in 1978 was the first game to feature a continuous soundtrack). So we took the opportunity to take a look back at some of our favourite examples of video game music and build a 19 track mashup, combining them with some other tracks we love.
It took a lot of energy to not start crying at the thought of a platform game about my favourite novel, but I just about managed. After all, it’s hard to cry and control NES Nick Carraway running through Gatsby’s mansion, picking up bonus cocktails and shooting down waiters. This has to be one of the best things on the whole internet at this moment: a true work of art of a game that is so true to the novel and the NES style. Oh God it’s amazing. I’m going to go and play it again now (I haven’t got past the garden stage yet) and then I’m going to write to Charlie Hoey at The Barbarian Group, who made this incredible game, and thank him profusely. You should too.

Yesterday Sony announced the PlayStation 4, the long-awaited replacement for the now seven-year old PlayStation 3 gaming console. While Sony has not released images of the new console, they have unveiled new versions of the Dual Shock controller and Eye camera. Sony expects to ship the PlayStation during the 2013 holiday season. For more info see CNET’s coverage of the announcement.
PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.
The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios(Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie(Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.
With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.
With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4′s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4′s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.
Video game director Leonard Menchiari and a small team of Italian developers have created a riot simulator for iOS and Android devices titled RIOT. The events in this simulator are based on real life “riots and manifestations happening in our world today.” You are able to choose which side of the protest to control, the riot police or a gang of rioters. Leonard and his team are currently raising funds on Indiegogo to help with software and licenses. RIOT will be coming out for Mac and PC sometime in the future.
The main purpose of this project is to create a game that will get people to be interactive with two opposing forces during clashes between rioters and police while showing the moral aspects and viewpoints of both sides.
The Oculus Rift, an upcoming virtual reality headset founded and designed by technology enthusiast Palmer Luckey, will allow gamers to fully immerse themselves into video game environments. Once the headset is strapped onto the user and they begin a game, the movements of their head from the left to right, up and down will change the perspective while hunting down bad guys. At this moment, the headset is currently only being developed for computer games. Oculus Rift Developer Kits are available to pre-order online and are set to be shipped in early April 2013.
The Oculus Rift envelopes the vision of people who wear it in vivid, three-dimensional images. The sensation is like watching an IMAX screen that never ends. The headset is currently designed to work with computer games, not with the popular consoles made by the likes of Sony and Microsoft.
